11 Tips for Networking Successfully on LinkedIn

The last time I was speaking to a recruiter, he told me that his favorite recruiting tool was LinkedIn.  He told me that he loved its ease of use, how quickly he could learn a lot about people, and the fact that, in his words, “You can find anyone who is serious about their career in a few seconds.”

LinkedIn has become a virtual resume, and if you tend to it properly you can use it to advance your career.  Here are ten tips to make your LinkedIn profile not only look as impressive as you are, but also make yourself a great networking asset in the community.

It can seem tedious to fill out yet another social networking profile, but when it comes to LinkedIn there’s always another opportunity around the corner.  Take the time to fill out your profile entirely and update it with new accomplishments.

Studies have shown that profiles with pictures are much more likely to elicit a positive response than no picture at all.

In a lot of cases, your LinkedIn profile is the first impression that people get of you.  While it may not matter whether you write “u” instead of “you” on Facebook, LinkedIn is an extension of the business world where that kind of talk is mostly inappropriate.  Write thoughtful content.  Also, make sure that your profile picture conveys the best you possible.

Groups on LinkedIn are a great way to discuss the victories and challenges you may be facing in your industry.  Do a LinkedIn search for keywords in the group that you want, and more than likely, you’ll find something interesting.  Join up and start talking.  This will give you the opportunity to connect with new people, as well as stand out with thoughtful and well written insight.

One of the best ways to remind everyone what you’re up to is to feed your Twitter stream into your LinkedIn account.  This means that every time you update your Twitter account, your 140 characters of gold will end up on your LinkedIn page.  This is a good reminder that you not only exist, but that you’re making things happen.

The best way to get someone interested in you is to provide them with relevant and interesting information that’s worthwhile in their life.

Like anything, setting goals and target numbers for how you want to make progress on LinkedIn is extremely valuable.  Commit to spending a few meaningful minutes on LinkedIn every day and you’ll be amazed at how many people you’ll end up getting to know.

The right-side toolbar on LinkedIn includes a “How You’re Connected Tool” that illuminates degrees of separation between you and the person you want to meet.

The paid version of LinkedIn lets you send messages to anyone on the network, but if you don’t want to spend the money you can also ask for an introduction from mutual contacts.  Most people are more than eager to help others form meaningful relationships.

It’s easy to find a flood of people online that have all the best intentions. They want to develop relationships with other people and form valuable bonds, but at the end of the day a lot of people just want to go home to their families.  Take a couple small steps to go out of your way with the people you really want to network with.  It will pay off in the end.

Don’t hesitate to send a helpful link or a targeted message to your target contacts every now and then.  This keeps you in the forefront of their mind.

7 Company Research Tips Before The Job Interview

How to take advantage of your last chance to research a company and be best prepared for the job interview.

To give yourself the edge, research the employer organization and interviewers before a job interview. In this age of the Internet and business networking, it’s getting increasingly easier to do this.
Interviewers will expect you to have some knowledge of the organization before you meet them. By researching the interviewers as well, you’ll know what to expect from them, and what they expect from you.
If you don’t know who your interviewers will be, call the person who invited you to the interview and ask them.
1. Start with the job description
The organization will expect you to have read through the job specification before you apply, let alone before the interview. Check it thoroughly and glean information on your department or function area.
What are the recruiters really looking for? How do your skills and experience match up to that?
2. Use the Internet
Go to the organization’s website and read up on it. Browse other sites – like news sites and social networks – for other mentions of the company. What is it known for? What is its reputation? Where is it heading?
Look at your interviewers’ profiles on the company website and social networking sites. What are their responsibilities within the business? Is there anything relevant in their career background? What projects do they lead? Which business areas are they interested in?
3. Read the small print
While visiting the organization’s website, check out Investor Relations and the sitemap. You’ll be surprised at how much useful information you can get there.  See how the company is performing and what the turnover / share price is.  Gain that little extra insight to shine above the rest.
4. Connect through LinkedIn
Use LinkedIn to find people within the business, what they do and perhaps they’re happy to have a chat with you. Check your own connections and even your shared connections for greater access to people. Use LinkedIn’s introductions function to ask a connection for an introduction to one of their connections.
5. Watch the news
Look for mentions of the organization or your interviewers in the press. Where has the organization been mentioned, what for and with whom?  What are the latest developments in the business and which areas are they focusing in on?
If your interviewers are quoted anywhere, what do the quotes reveal about them? How does the article describe the interviewers’ roles within the company? Does it tell you anything about their background history?
6. Get on the phone
Call the organization’s HR department or reception and ask about the company, the role, the department, and how the business is going.  Sometimes you’ll be amazed at how much information they have and are willing to share for your job search.
7. What does your agency know?
If you found the job vacancy through a recruitment or placement agent, ask her the following questions:
What do you know about my interviewers?  What’s their role and their style? What’s going on in the business at the moment? What are they looking for specifically? Why has the agency put me forward for the job?Have other candidates been sent? How many?If so, what happened? What was asked, expected, what went well/wrong?Is the company hiring in other areas? Why are they hiring?
By doing some proper research, you’ll go into the interview prepared, feeling more relaxed and confident. The interviewers will not only pick up on the fact that you’ve done your homework, but also that you’re calm and approaching the experience with the right attitude.

10 Real World Tips to Find a Job Close To Home

Sick of commuting? Here are some ideas on how to find a job near where you live.

This is a guest post by Diane Dolinsky-Pickar. If you’d also like to guest post here on JobMob, follow these guest post guidelines.

How long is your commute door-to-door? An hour? More, with traffic?

If you see yourself dreading the commute, or you’ve met the local cop one too many times as you rush to the train, it’s time to find a local job. But how do you do that when your network and contacts are far away?

Haunted local job

Develop a geographic boundary for where you’re willing to travel, and then get into head-down mode to identify employers in that area.

The list below is a starting point.

1. Sell yourself

Give everyone you know your 30-second elevator speech, including other parents, neighbors and folks you may mix with as tennis partners/country club friends/farmer’s market enthusiasts.

2. Join local meetups

Go to Meetup.com and fill out your topic or interest, plus city or zip code, and join a local group in your industry. With so many professionals under- and unemployed, you’ll gain support from networking and learn a great deal from the speakers. At the Meetup I went to this morning for Project Management professionals, I was told more than 30 people had landed on their feet in a job, since joining the group.

3. Attend local networking groups

For example, Gotham City Networking utilizes a referral network to generate business among members, and therefore, limit membership to one subject matter expert per group. If they have a need that you can “plug” with your expertise, upon joining you can become the one they refer folks to.

4. Attend mixers and business trade shows

Often, a local Business Council that is associated with the county or city government will present a yearly business expo featuring local products and services. This kind of event has sponsors that may be hiring, and if so, they will be listed on the direct mail flier or postcard that’s sent out. Research the sponsors beforehand, and reach out to them in advance.

5. Run a local seminar

Present your knowledge of a subject at local venues, including church and synagogue groups, cultural organizations, and library programs. If you cannot find a group that sponsors an evening or weekend forum related to your work, offer to organize a panel to address that topic, and help promote it.

Local chapters of the Rotary Club or Lions Club frequently feature guest speakers at lunch meetings. If you know someone who is a member, contact them directly and ask if they’d advocate for you to get on the calendar as a future guest presenter. The members who attend are locals and potential help to you in your job search.

6. Comb community newspapers online for local business news

Identify nearby companies and contact them for an information interview. Small and medium-sized firms may be intrigued by a professional who read a Q&A or saw a media mention. Use that as a hook. One mom I know was thrilled with the open response she got, when she was transparent about her aims and simply asked to learn more.

7. Reach out to local medical offices

Medical practices that employ nurses and office support personnel are often contacted by candidates who send a resume and never reach out. Without another “touch”, that’s practically useless. Here’s what one urologist told me: “If only a job-seeker would take the time to follow up with a phone call to say they’d like to come in and meet me and see what’s here … that small show of personal interest would make all the difference in the world.”

8. Apply for adjunct teaching positions at your local Community College

If there’s a university campus in your town, look for vacancies on bulletin boards and in the Chronicle of Higher Education (or your local equivalent).

9. Pop in at the Board of Education to apply for a building substitute position

Try several local school districts. Even though they may not need you now, people come and go in this capacity, and positions do open up during the school year.

10. Pound the pavement

I know it sounds too Old School, but it worked for me. Depending upon where you live and what level of security exists, here in the suburbs where I reside, I’ve entered office complexes and gone from door to door, handing out business cards to receptionists and asking to introduce myself directly to Officers. Of course, you risk being seen as a pest, but on the other hand, after one day of exercising my shoe leather, I received two calls from potential employers.

11. Use the radius tool of search engines.

I find Indeed.com particularly useful here.

30 Dangerous Personal Branding Habits

Which of these bad personal branding habits have you struggled with?

SlugsOf the list that follows, here are a few that have bitten me in the past, and occasionally come back to haunt:

Over-staying in your comfort zone

Break this habit by replacing it with a good one-

Once you start feeling comfortable with where your personal brand is at, take that feeling as a warning sign that you need to come up with new brand-building ideas and start executing on them.

Trying to do everything by yourself

Just because it’s your personal brand doesn’t mean you need to do all the branding work. If you’re serious about your brand, get assistance and expertise from people who can execute better than you at specific tasks.

Letting yourself be overwhelmed into inactivity

Being overwhelmed is a result of a lack of priorities and a lack of organization.

The most common example today is probably the ever-overflowing email inbox, a situation now made worse with the addition of social media messaging and cellphone text messaging. Here, you need to figure out which messages are most important and act on those ASAP while blocking everything else. Once you’re done, go through the latter and block as much as you can permanently. For more specific ideas, google ‘organize inbox’.

And now for the complete list…

Outright lying.Being inauthentic or just fake. Not delivering on promises, or just things you said you would do.Not following up.Aiming for quantity, not quality. Not measuring what you do, which makes it that much harder to know what you really achieved or not.Spending too much time measuring, or getting caught up in analysis paralysis. Not listening enough to your audience.Too much self-promotion.Navel gazing (too much self-focus).Not dressing the part.Being too aggressive.Over-staying in your comfort zone.Lacking confidence i.e. not being aggressive enough. Not having a plan.Lacking focus.Being inconsistent.Unintentionally frustrating potential brand loyalists.Switching tools, systems and/or methodologies too often.Too much branding reuse such as excessive cross-posting on social media.Trying to do everything by yourself.Over exposure.Lack of exposure.Unnecessary hyping.Having unrealistic expectations.Building unrealistic expectations in others.Letting yourself be overwhelmed into inactivity.Spending too much effort online, not enough offline.Spending too much effort offline, not enough online. Not spending enough effort anywhere.

How to Quickly Recover From Bad Job Interviews

8 tips for getting over every job seeker’s worst nightmare.

This is a guest post by Nisa Chitakasem. If you’d also like to guest post here on JobMob, follow these guest post guidelines.
It’s every job seeker’s worst nightmare.
You’re in an interview for a job you really want and it all starts going wrong.
Whether it’s your phone ringing or you giving the longest, most irrelevant answer to an interview question ever, once things start going wrong it feels like there’s no way back.
But there is.
It is possible to get things back on track and limit the damage during the actual interview. There are also some follow-up steps you can take after the event to rectify the situation and to move on with your job search regardless of what the outcome of the bad interview is.
Don’t panic
Even if you’re convinced you’ve made a massive mistake in the middle of your interview, keep calm and carry on. The interviewers may not have even noticed, or if they have, they may be willing to allow it depending on how the rest of the interview goes.
Control your emotions
Even if you feel like bursting into tears because the interview is going so badly, keep yourself in check. Keep things in perspective—it’s only one job interview, not a fight to the death.  If you really are emotional, excuse yourself to the bathroom so you can take a moment.
Avoid dwelling on your mistake
Yes, you made a mistake, but if you keep thinking about it for the rest of the interview, you’ll be distracted and that will make matters worse. Put the mistake out of your head by listening carefully to what the interviewers are saying. This will help you remain in the moment instead of thinking about what just happened.
Don’t try too hard
If you overcompensate your error by trying too hard, you’ll tighten up and will probably go on to make more mistakes. Instead, focus on executing your original game plan for the interview and try to keep your breathing even.
Do NOT vent online
You may think there’s no way in a thousand years that interview landed you the job, but that’s still not an excuse to jump on Facebook and rant about the experience. Firstly, you never know- the interviewers may still be considering you and therefore may be monitoring your social media presence to see if you’re professional online. Secondly, other employers you’ve applied to may also be checking your online profiles.
Send a ‘thank you’ note
No matter how embarrassed you are after the bad interview, take the time to at least email a ‘thank you’ note to the interviewers. It can’t logically make matters worse and is a simple sign of acknowledgement and politeness or at worst, just think of sending a ‘thank you’ note as an act of closure.
Get in touch with new thoughts
The last thing you may want to do after a disastrous interview is to email the interviewers with new thoughts or ideas about the interview topics. However, by emailing them with things that occurred to you after the event, you may be able to salvage the situation. In the clear light of day, your thoughts will be more lucid and can give the interviewers a more accurate idea of who you really are.
Move on
Focus on the other job applications you’ve made and how you’re going to improve upon your interview technique. If learning from your interview mistakes helps you to ace the next interview you get, the bad interview will have been worth something.

Skills from aptitude and interest can be homemaking, plays basketball, fixing cars and many more. All these elements could determine whether or not you are able to work with a team, be able to handle multiple tasks, have viable knowledge about human evolution, knowledge of electronics and ability to diagnose mechanical and numerical problems. The list goes, but be sure to consider the skills that will be beneficial for a working environment.

2) work history. This includes voluntary, part-time, freelance, summer and full time jobs. When you have entered all of your previous employment, examine the skills you need to work in each work duty.

Many interviewers know in body language, and you will find that throughout the interview, they will be looking for tips on your personality from the way you act, speak, and move. it would be anomalous to assume a different set of body language during the conversation. What you need to do is pay attention to your body language, so at least it communicates transparency and honesty.

Avoid telling lies or beautify your answers.Experienced interviewers will notice this in a moment. Always acknowledge your Palms and avoid crossing your legs or arms together.Don't be afraid to make eye contact talk while; just make sure you don't come across as frightening.

Apart from the possibility that your potential employer will call the former employers when they view your job history previous employers and colleagues is also a good source of information related to that field.

When you request help from family and friends, there is the possibility that the information they can provide you with everything from another source; They may not be able to give you first hand information or detailed information unless they also work in the same field that you came from or the like.

These are the most important people that you should include when you create a list of contacts, hot., it is better if you contact them all, so you can have as many options in your job search. when talking to them, tell them that you are actively looking for a job.

How to get references from warm contacts

You can find it difficult to use the network to find a job, if you can't rely on your warm contacts to provide you with the information you need. Sometimes you must ask your warm contacts to refer to at least two people, as you know, there will be able to give you the information you need.

There is, however, times, contact hot, especially those who don't know you very well, no, you can easily give information. some of your warm contacts can feel reluctant about vouching for you to their other contacts.

Because of this, you can find it difficult to use your network to make network ... and to get references to an easy task for you, here are a few tips.

* Close contacts hot.

Before you even need your warm contacts or before you even ask for help, keep in touch with your warm contacts. you can send notes or Greetings from time to time, invitation to "catch up" on them, invite them to lunch, be interested or help in their company or do anything just to grow your relationship with them.

In this way, by the time you need help, they can remember you and more easily can give information about their other contacts will be able to help you.

* Be polite.

Since you don't might have close personal relationships with some of your valuable warm contacts, it is inappropriate to simply give them a call and ask them for information about your field of interest.

* Listen to them.

In most cases, even if your hot contact know a little in the field where you are trying to find a job, they offer perhaps you advice.Be polite and interested in what you say. who know that the information they provide may be valuable to you in the future.

There are times your warm contacts can tell you tips on what way works best when you talk to the person to which you are referencing. your warm contacts can also involve what qualities and qualifications, the person who searches.

* Ask for a minimum of two references.

Before you ask for references, you must make sure that the contact hot had said all that he or she may say about your field of interest.

Even if they know a little about that field, it is rude If you cut them short while the speaker stand if they know someone who could help you.

If they had not been able to point to at least one of their contacts, well-thought out and ask them why they could not do this; They can give you answers, which may include the indirect comments or suggestions; They may also indicate a lack of confidence in their work strategy. If this is so that you may have to follow ups with them in order to prove that you are actually credible and match their requirements.

However, there are also times when they can't refer to their contacts because they just don't know anyone who might have information or may be interested in the product.

In this case, ask them to keep their eyes open for the opportunities that you might be interested in; you can also let them copies of your resume.

* Just ask for two references.

Two references are enough from each warm contact person; This is to have another option in the event of the first one that worked. asks for more than two references could be rude, as it can take a long time from your warm contact. There must be also your heat contact feel that trusting him or her to your job search. then ask unless they voluntarily information, not for more than 2 references.

* Contact referrals as soon as possible.

When the contacts heat give you referrals, there are times, which they also call these people personally to provide additional information about you; on the other hand, when you contact the person to which you were referred, can your references call your warm contacts to verify information or to ask for additional information about you.

Either way, you must contact your referrals quickly enough that these people can still remember their conversation with the contact heat or contact hot can still remember that thou hast spoken.

Sometimes after your references was called by your contacts hot, they anticipate your call and prepare yourself to questionnaires and exams for you to Not waste this opportunity take. by delaying follow-up on referrals.

Common mistakes with job search

Error deserializing body of reply message for operation 'Translate'. The maximum string content length quota (8192) has been exceeded while reading XML data. Not thinking about your overall career

If I were to revisit Maslow's Motivation Theory (Hierarchy of Needs), I would certainly add the need for a great career - I hope the reader will competitive - to almost every hierarchical level of the triangle from the basic needs to the very highest need for self actualization. Yet, consumed by the need for a "quick fix" (sometimes necessary) to unemployment, most candidates approach the job search process as a means to the next job, as opposed to a stepping stone for overall career success. In other words, you must approach your next job as if it were a springboard for your career ambitions.Your move must be driven by one key question: How will my next move affect my overall career?A smart move will put you on the fast track, while the wrong one will...

Lack of planning and research

Driving on an expressway without directions comes closest to describing an unplanned job search campaign. Best case scenario: you will get lost. worst case scenario: you will never reach your destination.

Before embarking on a job hunt, research the industry, the companies in the industry, salary offered, etc. Next back your research with a carefully planned - and executed - job search campaign. The following are a few issues you could address in your job search plan: What positions do you wish you target? How will you approach your job hunt? What strategies will you use to reach employers? How will you differentiate yourself from the competition? How many hours a week will you dedicate to your job search? What job search strategies will be used? Early write your plan in detail, please). make serious efforts to assess the progress of your campaign and take corrective actions as needed.

Weak resume

Weak resume - actually, a resume that does a poor job of marketing you, is in fact no. resume at all - is often the main culprit behind a failed campaign. If great skill, thorough research, smart and hunting don't produce results, you must consider revisiting your resume and cover letter. As a matter of fact, a strong resume should be the very first step in any job hunt. You must also avoid creating one generic resume for targeting multiple objective.

Ineffective positioning

What is the first thought that comes to mind is hearing of McDonald's?Fast food, right? How about Google? High quality search results (information), right? These are companies that have worked very hard to establish their corporate identity in a certain way.In the same way, you control year use ' s perception about you.
Your positioning strategy could be based on past results, strengths, skills, experience, etc. Consider the following issues for developing a positioning strategy: What do you offer that others don't?What gives you an edge over your competition? What makes you valuable to employers?

The following examples lend further clarity to the discussion about positioning:

Let's consider the example of a project manager.A project manager may choose to be remembered as a technically proficient project manager who is able to build and lead cohesive teams of 100 + professionals manage multi-billion dollar projects, and save at least 20% on established budgets.A sales representative, on the other hand, could be positioned as a sales professional who is able to get "face time" with C-level executives OR a sales professional with a 90% closing ratio OR both.

Resumes, cover letters, interviews - all of these are valuable opportunities for positioning oneself effectively. I stress here it effectiveness, for, an ineffective positioning strategy, in my opinion, spells "career sabotage."

Get the point? Now create your own positioning strategy.

Passive being

By restricting themselves to help wanted ads and online job boards, most job seekers commit the expensive mistake of being a passive job hunter. You sure are working toward your employment goals, but so are millions others, in direct competition with you.Don't get me wrong. Help wanted ads and job boards are certainly important job hunting technical that you must use, but so are many others.Markets your job search strategies by adding active approaches, such as calling employers, networking, etc.

Not applying enough

It is no surprise that applicants targeting one or two positions every week take several months (or even years) to re - enter the workforce. If you follow my standards, I would recommend applying for at least 20-30 openings every day.I know what you are thinking - no, I am not crazy.A highly competitive workforce and fewer available positions make it absolutely necessary to match or exceed this number. "I don't see that many openings," is a very common response I get to this suggestion. Well, if you are looking at one newspaper, look at five. If you have your resume on one job board, have it is ten.If you are calling one use everyday, call twenty...Again, markets your job search strategies - aggressively, I would now add - to achieve your goals faster.

Poor follow-up

Not following-up at all or, its counterpart, excessive follow-up are both not in your best interests.

Not focused

Everything from resumes to interview responses to search strategies must be geared toward a specific career path (or a few related paths if necessary). Some candidates make the mistake of focusing on one objective one and another, the next day.

Not networking

Not networking is one mistake.Networking only sporadically, is another.Networking should be a very important component of your search arsenal. Also, networking is for life.always keep in touch with your contacts, even after employment is secured.

Being financially unprepared

Job losses don't come with a warning, so it is very important to always be prepared.Build - or start building if you haven't - a financial reserve that could support you for several months (or even a few years). If you are currently unemployed, it may sometimes be necessary to freelance or temp in order to pay bills. If your bills are being paid, you will be able to concentrate on finding meaningful employment.

Not tracking performance

You will be wasting a lot of time if you don't track the performance of your efforts.E.g. what job search strategies generate most interviews?Which version of your resume is getting most responses?Tracking performance and initiating corrective actions are absolutely important.Job search worksheets can help in the process as well.

Using only well-known job boards. If you are looking for jobs online, don't restrict yourself to only the big job boards. While it is important to post your resume on the mega sites, don't forget the niche boards that cater to your profession.

Job hunting isn't ain't an exact science, but avoiding common miseries can certainly save you lots of agony.

Do you find you how frustrated, depressed, anxious and fearful that never, you will find a good job, or maybe even a little angry at situations in which you find yourself? If so, you're not alone. But knowing that you are not "only" in your frustration, while somewhat comforting to many, is not very useful for landing a new job that pays the mortgage.

Unfortunately, once you have reached this stage of your search, the frustrations, the fears and doubts become self-perpetuating as your negative thoughts occur even more the same and the success (or non-succès) of your life research employment up to exactly what your expectations are for elle.Avant that you know, your unsuccessful job search has begun to the impact of your esteem self-esteem, your energy to find the perfect new jobs decline, and your search for employment stands.

Everything begins with a change in your state of mind, acknowledgment that you absolutely know the perfect job for you is out there waiting for you and a decision will do you whatever it takes to find this job.

"Easier than said" is that you are probably thinking right now. But the truth is, it doesn't have to be difficult. Here are some tips to restart before the momentum with depressed job.

Check and adjust your attitude about searching for employment. Don't underestimate the importance of a positive attitude in your search and don't forget that you can always choose the way in which you receive and reflect the circumstances of your vie.lorsque you find you think negatively your job search, you can choose consciously change these more positive thoughts. For example, you can choose to adopt a "failure is not an option" and find a job as if it were a work itself. Yes, job search is a process and often takes time, but a "positive" attitude that radiates self-confidence is an attitude that people is to respond positively. A positive attitude will make it more likely that you will receive the support and assistance of others, it will help you to be noticed by employers, and it will almost always win you the offer of employment on another candidate with a less - than the positive attitude.

Stop with the apology! You know those: "my job search will really much time." "Finding a new job will be really difficult." "I deserve what I really want to." "I don't have enough help." "I am not smart enough or sufficient qualified." Do you find that the constant conversation running in your head you tears or you accumulate? This pessimism help you or hurt you? Guerilla Marketing for Job Hunters

As competition grows in this ailing economy, guerilla marketing is a new alternative.  Just make sure the company culture accepts your methods, so they think you are clever and not crazy!  Think of original ways to market yourself in a creative manner.  You can get the job you want by not doing what everyone else is doing!  Stand out!

Billboards
Place your picture and a brief career summary on a billboard.  Although expensive, it shows employers your creativity, passion and drive to land the perfect job.

Personal Resume Website
Create a website tailored towards your skills and resume.  Some can be expensive, but the chances on being found increase due to the Internet being used a main search tool for recruiters.  Post a portfolio of projects you have worked on to show skills you can offer to a prospective employer.

Windshield Marketing
Distribute flyers on cars promoting yourself, skill sets or resume.

Donuts and Breakfast
Bring the office donuts or breakfast every Friday, specifically to the department where you want to work.  They get to know you and your work ethic better.  This is a popular practice of clients and vendors to stay fresh in the company’s mind.

T-shirt Promotion
Use a single-shirt maker service such as Cafepress.com, to create a piece of apparel that highlights your career assets and credentials.

Sandwich Boards
Stand (or dance!) on a street corner with a sign presenting your credentials or career summary.  Make sure it is a popular and SAFE corner.

Are You Too Hard On Yourself?

Remember when you were a teenager, and you were convinced that everyone around you was staring at every single imperfection you possessed?  Fortunately, as we get older we realize that most people really aren’t that concerned with what we’re doing.  However, I often encounter job seekers who seem a little stuck in the mentality of “Everyone is looking at me!”

Few things in life are absolutely perfect, and most people don’t have a “perfect” resume.  We work with many clients who have employment gaps, career changes, a series of short-lived jobs, and many other challenges.  What they also have is great experience, a dedicated work ethic, and a desire to succeed.  Which of these things do you think employers care about more?

There are some career obstacles that are insurmountable.  For instance, you can’t go work as a lawyer if you have a nursing degree.  You won’t be hired as CEO if you’ve only got two years of work experience on your resume.  But many of the issues that job seekers see with their own resumes aren’t that important to the people reading them.  Hiring managers really do understand if you took time off to care for your children or ailing parents, especially if you kept up your professional certifications or have gone back to work since that time.  They also understand that sometimes you take a job with a company that goes out of business less than a year later, leaving you without work.

As you search for a job, your ultimate task is to market one product—yourself!  Just like your parents advised when you were a teenager, it’s time to stop obsessing over your imperfections and focus on all the positive attributes you can offer an employer.  If you want the person hiring you to focus on what you can do, you need to focus their attention on the positive by remaining focused on it yourself.  When it comes to professional imperfections, it’s best to realize them, acknowledge them, and then move on.

When Coworkers Strike: 6 Tips for Handling a Difficult Colleague

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the average worker spends 7.5 hours a day working. That's about 38 hours a week you spend at your workplace with your boss and coworkers. Since you are spending so much time together, it's important to get along with everyone at the job.

Being around difficult colleagues can kill your motivation, lead to negative feelings on and off site, and make it hard to manage your stress levels effectively. Here are six ways that you can ease the tension and deal with the problem people in your office.

Scenario: You are on the phone with a client, and Coworker X begins to speak loudly and rudely right next to your desk.
The best tactic to take in this situation is to keep your emotions cool and be civil. This includes being courteous, even if the other person isn't offering you the same. Ask your client to hold on a moment and politely request Coworker X to lower their voice or move to another section of the office.

Scenario: You're catching up with a coworker in the break room who has recently come back from vacation. All of a sudden, Coworker X butts into the conversation.
If you have absolutely no interest in sharing a casual conversation with him or her, feel free to excuse yourself. Allude to the fact that you have to get back to work, make a phone call, or send an e-mail. Reducing contact, and avoidance in general, is an acceptable way to deal with this difficult colleague if done tactfully.

Scenario: The despised coworker turns in their part of the project that you are now supposed to integrate with yours. As much as you hate to admit it, it's well done.
I know this may feel beyond your capacity, especially if your negative feelings towards this person are extreme. However, paying someone a genuine compliment changes an aspect of your relationship. If you can find something positive to say, and actually mean it, they will react in a positive way and you in turn will feel better.

Scenario: You are competing with Coworker X for a promotion. Coworker X engaging in all kinds of dirty election campaign tactics, including criticizing your work in front of your boss.
Instead of focusing unnecessary energy on your coworker who is trying to bring you down, turn your attention towards your work. As long as you do the best job you possibly can, your nasty colleague will look petty and incompetent in comparison.

Scenario: Coworker X did something you found upsetting or offensive months ago. You are still festering with resentment and you see red every time he or she walks by.
Yikes. Resentment is one of the least productive emotions you can mantain. Harboring resentment only hurts one person - you. Remember that there are two sides to every conflict. Acknowledge your side, see what you might have done wrong or could have done better, and learn from the mistake. At the end of the day, you are only responsible for your actions, no one else's.

Scenario: You have so much conflict with Coworker X that you are on the verge of quitting, screaming, crying, or acting out physically.
If the situation with your despised colleague has gotten out of control, it may be time to seek outside help. Some corporate offices offer an employee counselor or help line for free. Human resource personnel are also a great option. Your confidant may be able to help you put the situation in perspective, make some changes in the office, or suggest another route to take.
