Your job search is not going that well? Tips for You!

If you've been searching for a job for months and soon empty hands, you can ask what you are doing poorly. Although I cannot say with certainty that you are doing poorly or even if you make mistakes, I can provide you with some useful tips. Here are some things you should consider if your job search is not going so well.

1 - Employment for the application you are

Is that you are qualified for the jobs in which you are applying for? If it is correct to take some "opportunities" and apply your dream, effort is focused more large part of your search on the jobs that are technically outside of your research time. Read carefully all the requirements of the position.Allows to says that you are a manager of Office with four years of experience, but the hiring company is looking for five.He is honest close enough for essayer.Toutefois, if you don't have any experience in managing, but have worked as a Secretary in Office for two years, you do are really qualified pitch for the poste.Il might be preferable pass and your attention elsewhere.

2 - How are you application for these jobs.

In most cases, if a list is displayed online, you are required to submit your application or resume in ligne.Vous want to read any just to check mail. Some of these career Web sites, most of them automatically have a "click here to apply" button, but what happens if you were asked to send your curriculum vitae, by fax or by e-mail? Your resume may go undetected for months or never!

3. Your C.v.

How long did take you compile your resume? If you are a good typer, you could have typed until your curriculum vitae in less than 30 minutes .c ' is correct, but spend you enough time above? your resume is your first chance and the best variety for a job interview. You want to ensure your resume is also perfect as a perfect can be. This is to check your grammar and your spelling, make sure than anything you've written direction and ensure that the layout is easy to read. Most importantly, make sure that define you with precision. If your CV is and old copy had stored you on your computer, update your job descriptions to update dates and so on.

4 - Where are you job search

The internet is one of the best ways to get a line emploi.En, you will find a large number of Web sites search .Malheureusement, most of us focus our time on search of large and well-known sites. This is good, but we know that there are many more out there. In fact, there are even sites that are designed exclusively for local businesses. In addition, forget about the fashioned newspaper old traditional either. In fact, now many newspapers have their registered classified sections online too.

Note: If you want to maximize your job search (search sites more in the shortest period of time), consider a search for a job Office or the finder.Ces programs are not required by any means, but they allow to find thousands of sites, upload your resume, apply for jobs and much more!

5 - Frequency you are searching

There are so many of us are out of work now that a hiring manager is likely to get many applications and curriculum vitae.Parfois, they can get a list of work he has only been for 48 hours because so many people appliquent.Il has no guarantee how long information will remain displayed so that you want to act rapidement.Pour you, this means making your souvent.Vous research want to find the best sites not less than twice per day.

Why Praying & validation is not a practice research sustainable employment

I talk to a lot of people about their job search practices, and I'm often impressed by the very organized, well thought out systems that people use to manage their search process. I had one client whose Excel spreadsheets seemed like something I'd find at Bloomberg's data analysis center. Despite her hyper-organization, from day one I was confident that she'd find a job quickly, and that she'd also be very good at the kinds of jobs she was looking for. My opinion: if you can sustain a highly organized system throughout your job search, more power to you - you're that much more likely to land something. In my judgment, following up and following through is perhaps 20% memory and persistence, and 80% organization.

With certain job search practices, a good organization system is downright essential. If you find that you are combing the Web and applying for jobs - what I call the "Post and Pray" strategy - I highly recommend a system for organizing your applications. Your system can be whatever works for you - using Evernote.com, Excel, a notebook, Diigo - doesn't matter as long as you can sustain it through the process of selecting, applying, interviewing and starting a job.

I'd like to elaborate on the "Post and Pray" job search strategy, so you can see why it's important to get organize. Let's say you see an enticing posting a job board, quickly read the description, then attach your resume and click submit. Done. Finito. Then, because you applied for a job you feel like something might happen - and it might - but there's a lot of hoping and waiting involved. Few days go by... A week... A few months...Some people spends entire days of their lives the Internet and "posting and praying" e only to become very discouraged by the lack of response they receive. After just a few days of this, you may start to wonder: is anyone home? Why doesn't anyone get back to me!

Now consider why there might be no response from the other side: the potential use who took the gambit and posted his job description on the web. Imagine Mr. Recruiter sitting at his desk, Monday morning, fresh off the weekend, coffee in hand. Consider his surprise when he logs into his recruiting email account and he sees 74 new applicants. 74! And he just posted this position on Friday! By the end of the day on Monday, won't all the resumes start to look very similar? Most companies don't have the resources to act like a college recruiting process where there's a whole admissions team pouring over the applicants - it's likely just Mr. Recruiter who now has 346 applicants for the 7 positions he's working on. Will he even go through all these applicants? He Will see your resume? Will he take the time to respond? Very doubtful. What he'll probably do is favor 3 or 4 applicants that other people referred to him - and ignores the rest. Can you blame him?

Now, despite Mr. Recruiter's overwhelming workload, and the low odds - in my opinion, there's still nothing wrong with the post & pray strategy. It can produce an interview and ultimately a job. Yes, I've heard it happen even on job sites as generic as Monster, CareerBuilder and Craigslist, where recruiters may receive 1,000's of resumes. However, it's important to be honest and realistic about 2 aspects of this strategy.

(1) Posting and Praying is not at all sustainable by itself. If posting and praying is your hand strategy gold (yikes!) your only strategy, it will suck the life out of you and cause you great distress after just a few days. You will not be able to sustain your productivity or focus, and you will become frayed at the edges from staring at your computer screen and filling out forms. You'll probably wind up lonely playing a lot.

(2) If you are working this strategy - as part of a larger strategy - then I say do it aggressively and creatively. Get really organized and follow everything up. Make a killer Excel Spreadsheet or keep a handwritten notebook of everywhere you've posted and when - and follow-up at routine times. Posting & praying is okay - but you're much more likely to get a response if you send a follow-up email and a specific cover letter. That's why organization is so important: how else will you know where you applied, and when?

Now, if you've tried posting and pray before, I suspect that you will probably agree with me about 1). It's mind-numbing and soul destroying to search, fill out a form and click submit more than a few times a day. So, I doubt I'll get much disagreement there. However, my guess is that some of you might disagree with 2). You might think, if Mr. Recruiter is already so overloaded, how will sending him more emails win him over to look at my resume and consider me? Won't he ignores that email too? Won't I just be bothering him because he already has so much to do?

Well, sadly, the answer is that he probably won't respond to your email either, but the good news is that I doubt you'll be bothering him. I think it's worth it to follow-up because you create a new possibility, that he might see you)-and you are exerting more of your personal influence over the outcome. So, now, if we imagine Mr. Recruiter with his 74 new emails, consider for a moment that all of those 74 emails are likely containing the same formatting on his screen, they have the same look. It's a pretty drab landscape for Mr. Recruiter to look at his email inbox on that Monday morning and see 74 similar resumes. Now, imagine your email coming through - your email with your personal domain name - with your engaging writing style - with your charm and wit. Perhaps you could catch his attention, perhaps you could stand out? I think you're still praying, but your follow-up email just might change the odds. More, doesn't it feel better to do something than to simply pray?

However, I must say that "doing something" will not be satisfying unless you feel good about you overall approach to your job search. I often hear people say something like "searching for a job is a job." They will tell you to treat your job search like it's your most important job. I think people who say this are probably well intentioned and they're speaking figuratively, but if you are literal like I am, and it's true that searching for a job is a job, then, uh oh, how do you quit that job? I don't think anyone is looking for a job looking for jobs. That job would stink.Looking for a job is an often thankless set of tasks that doesn't pay anything and offers up a lot of heart. Would you like to apply for that?I don't think there's s anyone out there who likes it. good at it, maybe, but would they rather be paid for their work?Yes.

No, for most of us, applying for jobs - especially posting and praying - is much more like a chlorine than a job.In my opinion, you can transform the period of unemployment by relating to it realistically and honestly, and learning the skills to handle it as a chlorine every time it arises, because who knows when you might have be looking again? So, my question is: how do you do this chlorine more effectively? How do you stay on top of it, manage it, get it done?It turns out that a big part of maintaining focus, productivity and some moral and self-worth throughout the job search process has to do with how you manage your activities - and the personal organizational systems you develop. When you have your search on track and under control, why pray?

Use alternative research in the 21st century!

21St century job search market is constantly evolving. Even for job-seekers. And so are the rules about how you can ask a great employment opportunity.

In fact, today there are two
.the marketplaces ' is the traditional market outdated curricula vitae, classified ads, website, agencies and recruiters, interviews assignments and rejection letters.

The other is the market research hot fast track employment career partner banks contacts, automated interviews, professional introductions, interactive dialog boxes the creation of jobs on the ground and many negotiations.

Let me show you what I mean.

In a traditional job search, you start by setting up a curriculum vitae. Your curriculum vitae follows a prescribed format that includes a goal statement and your work history in reverse chronological order. You add educational and personal data.

Throw an eye in the Sunday paper and comb through employment opportunities and discover some of online job sites. You send a resume or post on some popular Web sites.

Perhaps you will approach a couple of agencies or recruiters. If all goes well you get invited for an interview, perhaps, maybe no.The procedure is quite simple.

The job you are applying for is clear, too .the ' interviewer knows what is desirable for a candidate.Interview dress you, behave pleasantly, do your best to answer questions.

If there is a match between your background and the needs of the employer you can advance to the next step in the process making perhaps you remembered, perhaps not.If not, you can get a letter from "thank you-but-step-thank you."But then, there is always hope for another interview somewhere.

This is dynamic ensuite.La 21st century have changed everything.

Bien.Vous will always find openings in the journal.Il ago still agencies and recruiters to work, as well. But the market has changed dramatically.

The expectations of employers and job seekers have moved decidedly new orientations.Par example, employers expect from job seekers to know and understand the counter-rotating company objectives that want prospects to show how they can contribute.

On the other hand, employment opportunities are created on the spot and the candidate can do part of the process of création.Transactions above average are products of above average negotiations where "$" are only a part of the total package.

More important still, if you want to Excel, if you want a senior position with more money, if you want to select your next job rather than to settle for it, you must understand and accept the dynamics of today's labour market.

Do you it in two steps:

A step: discard everything that you ever heard about how to find a job!

STEP two: become an expert in exciting new skills and strategies that will raise you job search success!

Search job myths

Research for today's work environment is more difficult than ever before with the down economy. Some rules have changed, and some have remained the same. One way I try and sense of the situation is to reach some common myths that I frequently encounter.

Myth # 1: "in this economy, I would take anything I'm offered".

While it is true that expectations have to be adjusted given the current economic context, which sell yourself short. Career decision that you make could be with you for years or even decades to come, it is important to consider all the angles. Initially targeting your search for employment who are at the highest level where you currently are or where you were. This will give you an idea to the market. If it is unsuccessful, then focus your search for positions at the same level. How can you whose positions are at what level? One way is by title, but this is not the only way. Another factor to consider is the size of the company and the extent of the responsibilities.A position of Director level in a small business can be equivalent to a level manager position in a large enterprise. You may want to consider to target your search by firm size, title and scope of the responsabilités.Planification your campaign in this way you will also help candidates salariales.Trop negotiations will be first offered figure, but in reality, even in those circumstances, it is often room for negotiation.

Myth # 2: "I'll find my job through the internet"

The internet is certainly a fantastic tool that every job seeker should have their organize their research work; campaign war chest However, most positions are landed by old fashioned - networking today!Proven network is often the most reliable source for candidates, because there is already a relationship that is established and thus, supposedly, less risk on the part of the hiring company in its decision. Current figures suggest around 60% of all posts is by its réseau.Toutefois as the internet permeates everything, it is a necessary tool even if one were to rely solely on its network.Internet allows companies to research and perhaps even projects in fact ligne.En, search you do on the internet can help you to discover a new project developed by XYZ Company in your town may request an appeal to someone on your network can be connected in some way with XYZ Corp. The search for a job sites should not be updated either, but probably moved total confidence in their full effectiveness.

Myth No. 3: "I have a severance nice; "I will take some time off the coast, relax, and then begin my job search"

Although not a bad idea to take some time and spend more with your family and catch up with perhaps on some of these projects from home that you have been back for last two years, don't get too comfortable. The typical time for a successful job search is four months. This chronology could grow economy bas.Si you received an award for four months and then expect that at the end of the time, you'll offer the first week that really begin your search, you may be in for a small dose of réalité.Commencer initially planning your campaign immediately. You may need to support what to do if you were the market work for some time. Reach out for advice and resources on how to conduct an effective job search campaign. If you start something happens that is "so-so" in your mind, you don't necessarily go to it if you have your cushion of severance pay. However, if your dream job during this period, you are ready to pounce rather than let it slip further because you were "taking off some time."

Myth No. 4: "I work with some recruiters and they find me a job."

I fell it myself on one of my research employment YH ' I was so sure "my recruiter" get me the ideal job that difficult to me any work myself. After all, I was a manager of success, and they will come knocking on my porte.Mal how I was! The truth is that recruiters rarely spend any time trying to find a job. They are good business customers and then seek to fulfill those orders. Recruitment is a bit like hotel - you simply need to head in bed - or candidates to positions in the case of companies and research. If you happen to be around when a recruiter Gets an order, then lucky you. But more often than not, the name of the game is still networking and recruiters are only a small part of your global network.

Myth No. 5: "I do interviews."Once I have the chance to talk with the pattern, it will be like me and gives me the job.

It is a myth on several levels.First of all, there are generally six other candidates who, like you, have also winning personalities who are not win on the pattern. The only problem is that the pattern can choose only of you for the poste.Qui is it likely to be, it is likely to be the candidate who was more prepared. This means that someone who has spent time researching the company, the position and then perform several interviews the pratique.Aussi, day of the interview with a single decision-maker is more. There are too mush risk when hiring a company to leave this decision to a Manager.Interviews are usually held with several members of the team, and there is a consensus is reached on the candidate right .the ' another reason, it's a myth is because how do you know that you will be like them - the pattern of the team, the company? not only they fol you, but in a manner you interview les.Leur mesh with your values and work ethic? is there a fit culturally? interviews give generally only a brief overview of works of the company and you'll quickly discern whether it is for you.

There are other myths out there, but these five are highly relevant for today .the bottom line: sell yourself short, but use the tools in your Toolbox and employ multiple tactics to do the job you want.

The best way to avoid this problem is to organize your search for employment, which gives you an overview of the clear strategy and a structured planning so move you forward.

Describe your strategy

Start by creating an overview of your tactical employment.for research strategy, that you intend to use the list and the amount of time devote you to each tactic.A typical list may include the following:

·Réseau contacts

·Research sites online

·Search ads in newspapers

Some employment experts say that less than 20% of all jobs are located in or found in line with the other 80% by réseaux.Sachant log, decide how long you are going to devote to your job search, and then allocate as a result of this time.

Define the steps

Then, for each tactic to create a list of the steps involved. Here's what it might look like for tactical "network with contacts:

·Appelez contact

·Demandez meet 30 minutes get their comments and suggestions on your curriculum vitae as well as your job search strategy

·Confirmer date, hour and place of the appointment

·Rencontre contact, take notes on the conversation and redirects to one or two other contacts that you can meet collection

-Prepare and send CV job online or in the newspaper

Afternoon

-Attend networking appointment (if already planned)

-Write thank you note after appointment

-Check one or two online job sites

Weekend

-Prepare new week

-Check the lists online

Tracking of each activity.

For each tactic, follow all of your activité.Vous can use software or a plain with blank pages .the book ' idea is to keep notes on the actions of every day, their verification against your master list for tactics.

Use an exemple.Vous want to make an appointment for networking with Suzy Smith, so start with a blank page and put his name above, as well as information contact pertinentes.Chaque after you perform one of the steps in setting up a network (telephone call, prepare a package of curriculum vitae, go to the appointment, etc.), mark it on the page of Suzy.Notez date, time, actions taken and all notes that you have.

Monitoring of your activity creates two avantages.Tout first, when you have many activities happening at the same time, it is very easy to get confused or lose track of steps which must still be prises.À using your trace log, it is easy to see a shot of eye, wherever you are in each activity and what next step if vient.Le second advantage is that it keeps you focused and active in your search for employment it is easy to procrastinate and reporter looking for a job, but if you note daily activities in a log monitoring that you will feel more motivated to move forward and take action.

Elements of action

Finally, keep a separate list of the "action items" requring attention all suite.Si, for example, contact tells a position open in the company of a colleague and suggests that you call on this subject, it is on your list of action items will be processed within 24-48 heures.Cette list is an excellent way to address emerging issues and opportunities, while remaining always organized and follow with your regular schedule.

Search for employment for older workers

If you are in a long line of unemployment, is on the back of the head of the person in front of you, and you wonder how things come to this success. Take heart, there is a job for you. Even in this economy.

The June report US News and world listed tasks that older Americans are probably find available. I'll use this article as a jumping off point in finding jobs for American adults. We will visit all jobs and occupations in the article because in our current economic straits, some jobs would be intenable.Par example, estate broker seems not as something particularly good to have right now, even if it was available.

Tasks that we will examine are:

1 Retail sales / sales worker
2 Driver
3 Secretaries/administrative assistant
4 Tax preparer

We will make a few simplifying assumptions.First, we must stipulate that old worker is willing to move new employment and that he is willing to train for a new task, if necessary. These assumptions may not be as arbitrary as they seem.If you and a many colleagues have been laid off, it is less likely that the special skill that you have is not demand where where you habitez.Une will train and a willingness to move almost double your chances of getting a new job.

Since we are talking about an older worker, a long learning is beyond question.emplois as engineer, doctor, lawyer and Machinist are, unless you already have these skills.

Four domains, that we decided we will watch to see that that would be most fructueux.Nous will use one of the sites search popular of our recherche.À tell Yahoo hotjobs.Nous work are going to simplify our search criteria to facilitate searching and finding most jobs.

We will search on the word "retail" by typing the word into the keyword box and erasing everything which could be in areas of the city or the catégorie.puis press search .j ' get the following:

1 Detail: 21,944 jobs

A very good supply. Try some similar search terms:

A. sales: 36,938 jobs
B. workers: 8,513 jobs

2 Pilot: 15,167 jobs
A. trucks: 8,372 jobs

3 Jobs 16,455 Admin
A 16,455 administration jobs.
Jobs 7,511 b Secretary.

4 Fiscale 3,451 jobs
A. tax preparer 65 jobs

If you do a thorough job search you may be able to compare these results with those sites such as Monster and HeadHunter job search. If you want to wade through all the tasks in the world of work - and your skills are not much in use, that you need to - I recommend one of search engines such as, in effect, JuJu, or SimplyHired meta.Meta search engines find all sites search employment shortly in one fell swoop.

Meanwhile, back at the farm, what can we learn from our Yahoo hotjobs search? if you want to increase your chances of finding employment at the national level, do not become a tax preparer. These tips should be taken with a grain of salt.Obviously as we get closer to April 15, demand for tax must increase preparers and the search goes changer.Mais if you want a job right now, doing taxes of someone is not like as the way forward.

Advertising yourself as a worker or a guy who knows the truck looks like the best way to get a job.

If you have a CV that indicates that you are a Secretary, it seems that you could do better by creating a new RÉSUMÉ speaks of your strengths as an administrative assistant.

Despite the weak economy, someone somewhere is always hiring détail.Un administrative assistant with experience in retail sales people must be able to find a job quite easily.

For crevés let's add a few more jobs that we think might be demand.

1. 36,652 Manager jobs

2. 1,560 Intern jobs

3 14,734 Entry level jobs

Even if you try to enter a new field, search not employed as stagiaire.Vous must instead search for entry-level jobs.

As long as there are employees there must be managers so if you have a competence management seems to be a good bet for you.

Jobs sites pass through different procedures when you search for detailed information about a task, try to apply effectivement.Vous need sometimes on Yahoo, click an individual corporate Web site and apply to labour .d ' on the other hand, if you saved your resume on Yahoo hotjobs, it will probably be some tasks that you can apply for never leaving the site of Yahoo.

I would advise against working at jobs you'll find .Oui job search sites, these jobs exist .j's had two of those différents.Le problem is that most of the work at home jobs you will see are a scam designed to do one of the two choses.Soit separate you from your money or infect your computer with viruses or adware.

The tasks you want to apply some may require Office skills or experience of software you have pas.Il has often community colleges or institutions for two years near you who can quickly and expensive teach you all you need savoir.certaines well-equipped libraries have software Microsoft Office that you can practice on free of charge.

You must go to a school of vocational training that last recours.Ils can be coûteuses.Si you end up in a vocational training school, make sure you it has been in business for several years. make sure it is accredited and authorised to operate in your état.Recherchez complaints against the institution website mieux.Voir enterprise desktop if vocational school has any job search assistance and speak to older students to see if the assistance was timely and if employers welcomed certificate offering vocational school.

From the way in which the hands were shaken, is keeping an eye contact, the way in which posture was maintained, the smile was delivered up to the kind of dressing to be classified already.

Whatever your personal career background, skills and underlying talents, if first impressions never was striking enough to make an outstanding appeal to interviewers, counts nothing else; this can be the potential employers original interpretation of how a candidate will do on the job.

Whether this view is "fair" is irrelevant. Will you job? see part and your chances of success are much higher!

"Jobseekers FAQ on the thank you notes"

Career counselors tell jobseekers to send a thank-you note after an interview. In order to address the most frequently asked questions about how and what will send in a note, thank you, here is give some away.

Not the employer believes that an applicant is desperate and a sissy applicant, if he sends a thank you letter?

Of course not. Rarely makes an employer not glad to receive a thank you letter. It shall be considered as a common way to show politeness, a gesture of courtesy, one way to squash the rest of the interviewees, and a way to keep your name in advance.

It will not bring the ability to get the job?

Not in most cases, but it can in some point in time. So why take the chance?(so they pray)Answer: most bosses wavers between the two last most promising applicants, students and experienced officer for example after the final interview for a specific position. But when the boss Gets a thank-you letter from students, it made all the difference. Because of this simple well mannered gesture lander students on the job.

Can it be handwritten or should be, the typewriter?

Actually, it doesn't matter. Important is the idea to do this. It must be tailored to the company prospective and the officer, who has conducted the interview. Respect is thus further established. But if the company, the interviewer or the location used calls for a formal business letter, then do it.Mostly, is in order, if the interviewer and the applicant has built report a handwritten note.

Will it be okay to e-mail thank you note?

First thoughts specifies that this is a big no. it depends, however, the company's culture. If people in your organization are using e-mail in all their communications and correspondence, shall be acceptable. This also applies if the company is in rapid decision-making when rental applicants.Always remember that even if the emails fit together with the culture of the company, it is still a better idea to follow up on the e-mail message with a hard copy of your thank you.

So you can only save yourself from problems with the page "anything goes" right?

No.On the second page of the previous story is there potential applicants that almost was on the verge of becoming employed, but suddenly hit chemical tank after sending with a sloppy, poorly-fast thank you letters, many typographical errors and misspelled words. part of having a good communication skill to be able to write effectively and organizations don't have employees who have taught simple written skills.

Want to make a borrowed thank you letter?

Yes, borrowing is one thing; But be sure to look at the basic structure of the letter. Never plagiarize the entire letter, as it may be relevant for one person, but not for others. There is certainly, employers, who can distinguish a thank you note that has been copied or not.

If it was an interview for the Panel should thank you letters sent to all interviewers?

Frankly, it's best. The same letter to each is just as important as making one for each; Everything you need to do is edit some phrases for individuality in cases of interviewers would bump into one another and compare the comments they've received.

How quickly should a thank you note will be sent?

The golden rule is to send thank you notes within 24 hours following the personal interview.

Will it still be okay to mail thank you note, if the hiring decision will be made more quickly than when set thank you note is received?

Come to rest of it, if the e-mail message is also pre-historic for hiring decision-makers, then find a very quick way: it can be by e-mail, fax, express delivery, or personal delivery. If you have shipped the thank you note hand, can it actually leaves a great impression.

What if there is already a quote before themselves send thank you notes?

It is still better to send the notes thank you, as this can be used to accept or reject the offer; This could also be a confirmation of your agreement and/or understanding of quotes, you have given (salaries, benefits, other compensation, start date, vacations, etc.), this way any inconsistencies can be corrected before you even start for the job.

Always find a way to make it as personal as possible. think "out of the box, you can even customize what you have observed the interviewer has in his Office at the personal interview. Send an article that you think the interviewer might be interested in, is also a second proposal.

Whichever method you use, make it fast and professional.

How to revive a job search is at the dead with high-reimbursement activities

I frequently talk to potential clients who tell me they have been conducting a job search for X months without any success, or that they have sent out X number of resumes with virtually no response. When I press for more details, almost invariably, I hear stories about resumes posted in online resume databases and resumes sent in response to ads found on online job boards.
What is wrong with these job search techniques? Well...nothing is fundamentally wrong with them. In fact, they play an important part - a small part - in most well-constructed job search plans. However, these are extremely low-payoff job search activities, and if these are the only techniques you are using, the chances are far greater than not that your job search will generate disappointing and slow results.
If you are unhappy with the results of your job search, it is time that you took an objective look at your job search techniques. Are you spending too much of your precious time and energy on low-payoff job search activities while you ignore those that will produce the positive results that you want and deserve?
While the more effective job search activities - such as networking -usually require people to step out of their comfort zones, the returns generated by your investment of your time and energy will almost always be worth it.
So, if you find yourself stuck in a stalled, ineffective search for your next job, here are some high-impact tips that are almost certain to have a high-payoff on your effort through a faster, more successful job search.
1) Take a hard look at your resume. Like it or not, your resume is your first introduction to most employers, and your only chance to make a good first impression. Effective resumes are highly focused marketing pieces that are strategically written and designed to sell YOU as THE best solution to a potential employer's needs and problems. Your resume should be written to convey and illustrate your unique value proposition, with succinct "stories" that differentiate you from your competitors in the job market. Does your resume accomplish these goals? Is it focused effectively? Does it accurately present you in the way that you wish to be presented? If not, it is time to rewrite. If you need help, resume writing is our specialty at Distinctive Career Services.
2) Now, take a hard look at your methods. Do the methods you are using in your job search convey professionalism at every step? Is your approach courteous and does it illustrate an understanding of common business protocol? For example, do you always send at least a brief letter of introduction when you send a new contact your resume? I can't tell you how many times a prospective client tells me he isn't getting calls on his resume, and when I quiz him he will tell me that he has been sending his resume as an attachment to emails, and then admits that he has not been including an introductory note. In this day and age, when everyone is concerned about viruses and spam, do you honestly believe that a recipient will open an attachment that arrives with a blank email? Of course not! Or...Does the message on your answering machine make you sound like a polished professional or a party animal? Is your email user name a professional-sounding one or a cutesy one? You have tough competition in the job market. Details matter! Courtesy and business protocol matters! Everything you do in your job search should convey an impeccably professional image. My best advice: Apply some basic common sense and remember your manners. Do these two things and you will be fine.

3) Ramp up your networking efforts. Of all of the possible job search methods, networking is the most effective by far, and yet it is the method that the fewest people use. I know that you don't want to hear this, but no matter how uncomfortable it might be for you, networking is absolutely crucial and is the fastest way to your next position. Remember that when you are networking you are not asking people if they know of an opening or to give you a job, you are just asking for referrals or advice. Would you be upset if someone you knew contacted you to inform you of their job search and asked if you might be able to offer any advice or point her in the right direction? Of course you wouldn't. In fact, you might even be flattered. This is the same reaction that your personal and professional networking contacts will have. If you don't have frequent face-to-face contact with your network, the quickest way to jumpstart your search using networking is to send your resume and a brief letter to every single one of your contacts, and then follow up with a phone call a few days later. In most cases, people will be more than happy to help you out. But whether they are able to help you immediately or not, follow up with a brief handwritten thank you card. This is a gesture that will make a lasting positive impression.
4) Do your research; don't just blindly and indiscriminately send out your resume. Research the geographic and industry areas that interest you and identify the companies and opportunities that seem most promising and intriguing to you. Now research some more. With the vast quantities of information available on the Internet, you really have no excuse not to research thoroughly. Identify the hiring decision-makers and learn all you can about them and their company, their competitors, their challenges, and their future potential. This is a great time to call on your professional network. Who do you know who knows someone who knows some else at the company you are interested in? Once you have an "in" through a referral, it is time to make sure you are absolutely clear on your value proposition. In what way do you feel you could add value to the company? How would hiring you be beneficial? What is the return on investment that the company could expect if they hired you? Once you have the answers to these questions clear in your mind, it is time to approach the targets.
5) Consider a targeted e-mailing of your resume to headhunter/recruiter firms. But don't just use one of the cheap broadcast services that send your resume out to some unspecified list of 1000s of supposed recruiters. If you are going to do this, use a high-quality service that uses an up-to-date database of recruiting firms that they can break down and segment based on the firms' specialties. This is one of the services that we offer to our resume writing clients at Distinctive Career Services. Approaching the distribution of your resume to headhunter firms in this way ensures that the recipients of your resume are individuals who have a sincere interest in learning about you and your credentials. They will try to match you to their current searches, and if you are a fit, you will get a phone call right then. Otherwise, they tend to database your resume to search in relation to future recruitment assignments. Of all the suggestions, this is the most passive and the easiest for you to implement with the least amount of work. But, passive or not, if you are in a profession that is among those often handled by recruiting firms, you should definitely make this a part of your overall job search strategy.
Finally, I can't stress enough how important it is for you to follow up. Be assertive and approach your job search as if it is a job in itself. Schedule your activities, keep track of the contacts you have made and the resumes you have sent, and follow up regularly and consistently.
Yes, there is no doubt that job searching can be a highly stressful time. But you do have choices about how you will spend your limited time and those choices can have a profound impact on the success of your search. Choose to focus on the high payoff activities and you will find yourself back to work, in the job you want, much faster than you thought was possible.

Job - search type is yours?

There are probably as many types of Job Search as there are Job Seekers.
But the global increase in unemployment has brought about a new surge in job applicants, many of whom have not have experienced the task of the Job Search in many years. The result is many dissatisfied job seekers, who feel that their Job Search efforts are not being appreciated by the employment profession, with a resultant increase in long term job seekers.
However, if they knew which type of job search they were undertaking, they would know what type of result they should expect.
Direct Offer: The Insider
The direct approach and offer from a company, is often a surprise to the person, who probably as not an active job seeker. This type of job seeker is already directly known by the organisation, normally through being an existing employee. You could also be presently working for a competitor, supplier or an existing customer of the organisation. If you are approached, you have a 90% chance of being employed using this method.
Networking from: The Virtual Insider
This type of direct approach offer again is a delight to a person who is probably not an active job seeker, but is presently not known to the employing organisation. The result of this approach is a testament to their clear personal elevator pitch and track record of delivery, and the advocation by others often within the employing organisation, or by people within a common mutual network. This is a fast expanding area of recruitment, with companies now paying existing employees for successful introductions of new hires. If approached, you have a 50% chance of being employed using this method
Headhunted: The Star!
Modern headhunting is about direct from client business orientated briefs, which are fulfilled quickly. While the client side of the business has changed little but niched more, the search and find side of the business has been transformed by the boom in social networking. Now, techniques like Boolean search allow headhunters to create larger lists of suitably qualified applicants, and hence offer better candidates who are more researched in a quicker timescale. The result is that these types of job seekers are again often not active job seekers, but can be concluded as stars within their chosen profession or market. You have a greater than 35% chance of being employed if approached using this method
Networking to: the Inside track
We now move from mainly passive job seekers to active job seekers, those who are either employed or presently between positions. This next two types of job search require the job seeker to:
Know themselves, and what they offer Know what they want to do Be able to communicate the combination in a personal elevator pitch Be willing to research the desired/targeted organisations
This type of job search requires effort, and hence most job seekers avoid it not because they are more successful - often ten times as successful as other active types of job search; but because other options require less thought and effort.
The inside track approach requires that having decided to job search, that inside your target organisation/s you already have a previously developed contact/s. This inside contact may be as a result of you being a customer, supplier, competitor or business network contacts. Your initial approach is based on person to person conversations often over cups of coffee, making a subtle research based informational interview approach to asses who you should be talking to, and what they are seeking to achieve for the business. If you use this method, then you have a 20% chance of being employed from companies you target
Direct approach: The Navigator
The navigator approach is similar and statistically as successful to the inside track, but as you have no developed contacts inside the target organisations (start with a list of 50, whittle them down to 20 through simple research), you need to develop a contact base. With the development of business orientated social networking, and the increase in the number of companies offering existing employees bonuses for the successful introduction of new hires, this method is a lot easier than it ever was. It requires the same clarity of though on who you are/what you want out of your career as the inside tack, with similar levels of research effort on the target organisations, but development of suitable insider contacts. On average five times more successful than applying via job adverts in newspapers or job boards, with a 15% chance of being employed from companies you target on your researched list. This can easily be improved to virtual insider levels of success of 50% or greater with some more simple research and networking techniques, it just depends on how much you want a job with that company?
Recruiter: The Mountie
The next set of three job search options have differing rates of success, but have two things in common:
You will follow a defined HR process to be hired As the positions are openly advertised for, you will have high levels of competition. Expect 5 people to make it to the interview stage for each single position being recruited for, multiplied by three fold back down each stage of the recruitment process (ie: application, CV sift, online testing, telephone interview, etc). This could presently result in 100 original job applications
If you undertake your job search via a recruiter advert, and having checked out the strength of the recruiters relationship and brief to make sure you are not being CV fished, and further have not broken the "three recruiters and out" rule; then your chances of employment via this route are 15% or greater. You can easily improve this to 35% or more if you know the right tactics and questions to ask. The recruiter often works in a competitive environment, against other recruiters and the organisations own HR people, to fulfil a position. If the recruiter successfully fulfils the position and gets their man, then they get paid; if not, then its on to the next opportunity. Good recruiters always get their man, and after introduction to the employer you follow the organisations defined recruitment process
Newspaper or company website job advert: The Jockey
Newspaper adverts and company websites are a good source of real job opportunity. Firstly, they require effort and or cost on behalf of the hiring organisation, which means that the jobs are real and not CV fishing exercises. Secondly, you are direct on to the organisation, although you have to accept that you probably won't be talking to the hiring manager, but about to ride through a sanitised, wholly locally legal/ethical and HR managed/monitored recruitment process. Don't expect to be treated like you or a human being, the process is designed to be selective in a non-judgemental way. You hence have little choice in the race you are about to take part in, expect that you chose to enter it, and hence have little ability to affect its outcome. Your chances of being recruited via this method once you hit the apply button or send your application through the post are between 3% and 5%, although this can easily be doubled with some simple effort
Job board: The Donkey
Of all the methods of job search, the job board is the most common and actively used by many present day job seekers. Yet, the statistics show that only 12% of all positions are fulfilled by job boards in any market. If so few jobs are fulfilled by job boards, why do most unsuccessful long term job seekers spend most of their days trawling job boards? Simply, it doesn't require much effort to find or apply for jobs on a job board, but gives the job seeker the regular internal satisfaction of being able to say at the end of each day "yes honey, I spent the day job seeking!" As a recruiter, I know that some of those jobs "advertised" on job boards do not exist. The job board market is so competitive - with around 50,000 job boards in North America, and 50,000 around the rest of the world - that the cost of advertising a job on a job board can be as little as free. If the cost of doing something was free, and add in that you can repeat the same job advert for ever simply by ticking a repeat button, how often would you do that task? In a recent test, of 126 jobs advertised as available in a large city, an employment organisation found that the actual number of jobs fulfilling the search criteria was 10! When there are so many "false" or repeat job adverts, and when it is so easy to CV fish, is it any wonder that you chances of success via a job board can drop as low as 2%?
Job Search Conclusion
So, what type of job search are you undertaking? Statistics from various parts of the world show that a majority of job seekers focus most of their efforts in responding to job adverts from recruiters, newspapers or spending their time on job boards, where at best their average chance of success if 15% or less. Yet, over three quarter of jobs fulfilled in the past year have never been advertised, of which at least half of them are open for application from job seekers who just have to put in a little effort and know a few simply learnt tactics.
For instance, one job search tactic takes: 1second to understand; 1minute to learn; and within 5minutes applied to take your job search success in responding to job adverts from 15% or less to 35% or greater. Yet most would just prefer to go on proving the well known and proven job search results that they and others have always achieved.
The job search: what type is yours? Good Luck!
